 note = {P(論文), 個人と社会の関連性という問題は, コンラッドが作家となった当初から晩年に至るまで常に彼を虜にしてきた主要な問題であった。時にはリンガード(Captain Lingard)やジム(Jim), ノストローモ(Nostromo)のように個人的な夢想の世界における自己の理想像を現実の社会において実現しようとした男達, また, ヘイスト(Heyst), ラズモフ(Razumov)やバーロック(Verloc)のように現実社会から逃避しながら自分の行動を観念的に正当化しようとした男達もいた。彼等に共通する点は, 積極的であれ, 消極的であれ, 現実社会との関りにおいて, 常に自己中心的な考え方や行動が多分に見うけられるのである。その結果, 彼等は, 愛する者を亡くしたり, 自らの生命を落したり, あるいは自己の世界の崩壊を目の当りに見るといった, ある意味において, 自己の性格的欠点に起因する苦い人生経験を味わった人物である。『放浪者』におけるペロール(Peyrol)は, 先に述べた人物とは一風かわった人物であり, コンラッドの作出した人物の中では最も現実的, 中庸を心得た人物であると思われる。そこで, この小論ではペロールなる人物に視点を置き, コンラッドの個人と社会に対する考え方を, そして革命についての考え方を考察してみたい。, The relation between a man and society is one of the most important themes in Joseph Conrad's works. For him, society is originally a place for man to live and has been improved little by little, in accordance with historical necessities, to be suitable for man to live, even if it includes some kinds of contradictions, irrationalities and absurdities. So people must protect their society from excessively conservative politicians who are inclined to be despotic, and radical revolutionists and destructive nihilists who want to distroy and disorder the existing society. In this thesis, I want to examine Conrad's thoughts on what and how we should think and behave to protect our society through his work The Rover.},
