The additives used in the present experiments were concentrated formic acid solution (85%), chlorella which was cultured in the tanks, glucose and Kofasil-S. 1) The chopped Italian ryegrass containing 73% moisture was ensiled. The addition of formic acid, 0.1%, 0.3% and 0.5%, and of glucose 2% was effective in improving fermentative quality but addition of Kofasil-S was not so effective. The digestibility of organic matter by feeding the silages to wethers was 59% in the control lot (score 47) and 61% in the formic acid 0.3% lot (score 65). 2) It was not confirmed that the addition of chlorella, 0.15%, 0.5%, 1% and 3%, to the chopped sweet potato vines and to the chopped and crushed sorgo was effective inimproving quality of the resultant silages. The ruminants had good palatabilities to these sorgo silages. 3) Using the chopped Italian ryegrass at a low moisture, several lots of chlorella, 0.3%, 0.5%, 1% and 3%, of chlorella 0.5% plus glucose 1%, of chlorella 0.5% plus formic acid 0.2% and of glucose 1% plus formic acid 0.1% as well as that of control were set up as shown in the Table 15. All the resultant silages had good fermentive quality. It was confirmed that the good quality of silages of forage crops was obtained at low moisture regardless of additives. 4) The chopped aftermath of Italian ryegrass at 80% moisture was ensiled in the experimental iron silos (φ56cm×86cm). The four lots, control, formic acid 0.3%, chlorella 1% and glucose 2%, were set up (Table 18).
